Join Dr. Kyla Walters, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Sonoma State University and co-author of Walking Mannequins: How Race and Gender Inequalities Shape Retail Clothing Work.

Dr. Walters will presents her research on how employers reproduce gendered and racist beauty standards by regulating workers' size and look, and how new surveillance technologies lead to ineffective corporate decision-making based on flawed data.  In malls across the United States, clothing retail workers navigate low wages and unpredictable schedules to stylishly adorn sleek mannequins with the latest merchandise.
